What is Private Tutoring?

If you've never had a private tutor before, keep reading!  As a private tutor, Mr. Z will supplement the lessons provided by a classroom teacher.  He can provide one-to-one support to help students understand the content they are learning in school better.  This can help overcome struggles with course topics or provide additional time to work with a teacher to review for exams.

What does a typical session look like?

Students should bring notes, homework, and other resources to the tutoring session.  During the session a student can review the class or homework problems that caused the most trouble.  The tutor benefits from these resources; they help them understand the lesson goals the classroom teacher has set for students.  Where needed, the tutor will provide additional examples, develop strategies for problem solving, and explore common misconceptions to avoid. 

Duration

One hour sessions are the most effective.  During finals week or in certain other circumstances, longer sessions are needed, but students can fatigue after the first hour making the remaining time together less productive.

Frequency

Mr. Z has worked with many students with many different tutoring needs.  Some students benefit from a set weekly meeting slot.  Others schedule before important quizzes or tests.  Some schedule a few sessions during difficult units and then take a break when appropriate.  We can discuss what might be a good starting point and then reevaluate periodically.  Discount available for advance scheduling and payment of weekly meetings.

Location

In most cases, a spot away from the distractions of school and home such as a coffee shop or cafe is ideal for tutoring.  Surprisingly, libraries are not great locations because of how quiet they are.  The background noise in a cafe is actually least distracting.  There are a few locations throughout the North Hills that are great candidates.  Check the location of the session before scheduling.  Online Tutoring is also available.

The cost for a 1-hour session is $70
